This was Probably taken in the 1920s before my great uncle (by marriage) Stanley Winton created the Golden Sands holiday park in Lancing, Sussex, using redundant Pullman cars. See next post for a later view.
A DECAPITATED pony found on Pentewan beach was not the victim of a sinister ritual, say police.
The headless animal was found with a driftwood cross and dead seagull placed on top of its body.
The words RIP had been scrawled in the sand next to it.
Brixham coastguard made the gruesome discovery at Pentewan beach on the afternoon of May 7.
Coastguard officers then alerted the police to their discovery, who arrived at the scene at about 4.40pm.
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said the pony’s head had been “severed cleanly”.
An investigation has been launched but the animal’s death is not being linked to any kind of ritual, said the spokesman.
The police wanted to put such speculation “to bed”, he said.
He added: “There are a number of possibilities as to how the pony died.
“The head was chopped off cleanly but a propeller from a boat could cause that.”
“It is not being linked to any other horse death,” he added.
It is understood the pony’s corpse was removed by the owners of the beach, Pentewan Sands Holiday Park, on Wednesday, May 9.
St Austell police inspector Stuart Gibbons said he had heard the head had been washed up at Carylon Bay, and theories that someone had taken it as a trophy.
“I’ve heard when it was first found the head was there but is now gone,” he said.
“We just don’t know. We are keeping an open mind as to how the horse got there. It’s hard to sort the wheat from the chaff sometimes.
“Factually, I can say we have had no one come to us and report a horse as missing. I appreciate there are rumours but I’m not aware it’s linked to any cult or pagan ritual.
“We are not linking it to the previous horse mutilations down in Stithians.”
Anyone with information which may help the police trace the owner of the pony should call St Austell police on 101, quoting ’484 May 7′.
